“Eerie. A Pioneering work in the weird fiction canon. Even seasoned horror readers will be taken in by the atmosphere of existential dread Hodgson evokes.”

William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author who produced a large body of work, consisting of essays, short fiction, and novels, spanning several overlapping genres including horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction. Hodgson ran away from boarding school at age thirteen to become a sailor, and he often used his experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his writing. He enlisted twice to serve the British military during World War I and died in action by the direct impact of an artillery shell at the Fourth Battle of Ypres in April 1918.
