1873 - A Reconstruction Era Parish is Established
Lincoln Parish was established in 1873 as part of the reconstruction period after the American Civil War. The parish was named after President Abraham Lincoln and was created from pieces of Bienville, Claiborne, Union, and Jackson parishes.
Clues from the Past
Throughout northern Louisiana, several indigenous sites have been located and dated from about 3300–2600 BCE. Hedgepeth Site is located in Lincoln Parish and dates to the more recent part of this period.
Economic structure
Lincoln Parish is largely supported by the forestry industry. Lincoln Parish was once considered the Peach Capitol, but peach farming has dwindled over the past 30 years due to hard freezes in the 1980s and fungus in the 1990s.
Educating for the future
Lincoln Parish is home to Louisiana Tech University located in Ruston and Grambling State University in Grambling. Our two universities provide top-notch education opportunities for a wide range of careers.
Lincoln Parish School Board serves all public K-12 schools.

Louisiana Tech University offers students traditional yet innovative academic programs and a focus on student development and wellness. Nationally-recognized programs in nanosystems and cyber engineering, aviation, architecture, supply chain management and others are placed alongside great athletics, intramural activities and housing. The Enterprise Campus allows students the chance to partner with companies and faculty for practical training and innovation.
Grambling State University
Where Everybody is Somebody
Grambling State University is one of the nation’s top producers of African American graduates, boasting more than 40 undergraduate and graduate programs in fields like computer information science, nursing, arts and others. The home of legendary football coach Eddie Robinson and the internationally recognized Tiger Marching Band, Grambling’s history is long and full of excellence. It’s motto is “Where Everybody is Somebody.”
