Alma Woodsey Thomas (September 22, 1891-February 24, 1978) was an African-American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C. Now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th Century, Thomas is best known for the exuberant and colorful abstract paintings that she created after her retirement from a 35-year career as a junior high school art teacher. At graduation in 1924, she was the first student to earn a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Howard University.
