Kick off Black History Month with a thought-provoking lecture by noted author and historian Sherman Houston. Titled after his recently published and widely acclaimed book, Professor Houston’s lecture, “Moving on up a Little Higher: Mahalia Jackson, Champion of Freedom through Song,” will focus on Mahalia Jackson and her musical career. At the core of this exploration, Professor Houston will examine the wider context of her music, including the development of gospel and Mahalia’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. Signed copies of Professor Houston’s book will be available for purchase after the lecture
